Fill and flatten application forms - the two steps portals prefer
Application forms fail uploads for a quiet reason: the answers were typed into a form that was never locked, and the receiving system shows blanks. The fix is a two-step habit. First fill the form properly, using its real fields. Then flatten it, which locks the answers into the page itself so they display in every system.
Use Fill PDF Forms to type into the actual fields of a fillable PDF - government, immigration, school and job forms usually are. Then run the saved copy through Flatten PDF. Keep the unflattened copy as your editable backup, and upload the flattened one.
How to do it
- Open Fill PDF Forms and add your application form.
- Type your answers into the fields shown and save the completed copy.
- Open Flatten PDF with that copy and download the locked version.
- Upload the flattened copy; keep the filled original in case you need edits.
Common questions
What if the tool says my form has no fields?
Some PDFs look like forms but are flat pages or scans. Use Add Text to stamp answers onto the right spots on the page instead.
Why do portals prefer flattened forms?
Flattened answers are part of the page, so they print and display identically everywhere and cannot be accidentally changed in transit.
Is flattening reversible?
Not in the flattened copy - that is the point. Always keep the filled, unflattened version as your backup.
